Topic One- This topic seems like it is ready to go, because it has a clear audience and a solution in the form of a manual.

Topic 4 is definitely the topic that requires the most improvement. First of all, the topic is not focused, narrowed, or specialized at all. Instead of choosing a topic of “Improvements to the Washington Redskins”, they should try to come up with a specific way of improving the redskins. For instance, a good topic could be “Designing a nutrition guide for Washington Redskins players to keep them healthier and in better shape”. However, this example might not even be a valid one because the Redskins already likely have professional nutritionists that have solved the problem. Therefore, any topic regarding professional sports is probably not a good idea since they already hire professionals to fix every problem they have. Another problem with this topic is the audience. The primary audience would indeed be the General Manager because he is the decision maker, however it is going to be very difficult to get in contact with the GM or get him to read your proposal. Therefore, they could change their primary audience to the Director of Nutrition for the Redskins, for example. The secondary audience would then be the coaches, because they distribute the nutrition guide. The tertiary audience would be the players themselves because they are the ones being affected by the guide. Another problem with this topic is that it would be very difficult to do research. Chances are, you are not going to be able to get in contact with Redskins players and find out their current eating habits. Since this information would be necessary in order to improve their nutrition, you will not be able to create a good guide. Like I stated before, any topic with professional sports will be difficult because it is hard to get in touch with the players. Finally, the last problem with this topic is the Form. Powerpoints are not in the list of acceptable solutions. Instead, the person could create a nutrition manual.

Topic one is appropriate to begin work on, for it has a solidified audience as well as a good understanding of what the manual will be as an end result.

Topic four, Improvement of the Washington Redskins, needs the most work. First of all, the issue seems like it is really personal and does not apply to anyone besides the author. It seems like something that would be more opinion based than research based as well since it is the writers opinion on how best to not squander talent on your team. The issue also is not really a specific problem, it is more just a statement about how the redskins never win the super bowl. Is the issue that the paper is researching that the team is not very good? Then that makes the topic even more personal and not something that you could get away with writing about without causing an argument about the issue itself. The other successful topics were about things like study habits and manuals for officials, neither of which are super subjective topics.

Topic One and Three are “ready to go”. They have the topic narrowed down enough to research. Secondary sources should be available, so they do not get backed into a corner, with not enough information from the first source. They have identified an audience that would relate to their topic, and would be willing to institute their suggestions. Also, the form they are choosing to present their topic would be an effective means to relay their message.

While I think that the “How to Study” project does have a decent and feasible overall idea, there is much that could be done to improve it and make it ready for all-out pursuit.

Topic One: Ready to go. The author has a clear grasp of what he wants to be doing and how he’ll do it, and it aims to produce one of the products specified for this project.
